If you opened your phone right now, how many photos of things that have inspired you would there be? I’d suspect there’d be quite a few. One of the benefits of the modern-day smartphone is the fact that it has incredible photographic capabilities—not to mention filters with which to play around. Sunrises, sunsets, people, animals, sports, concerts, and the list goes on forever of the photos we take.
Why do we take them? What makes you pause and want to capture a moment in time?
As artists, we often do this too. Sometimes, capturing a scene in our memories or a photograph, ignites an idea or vision we wish to create from our perspective of how what we see makes us feel.
These settings can be found anywhere. However, traveling is a huge motivation for most when it comes to art and photography. The imagination catches fire when we open our eyes and our spirits to new places and experiences. Down every road and around every corner is a new place to explore and learn about. Cultural experiences, music, colorful marketplaces, and even ancient ruins can have a visceral effect on us when we step outside of our comfort zone and into another world. In these experiences, you may unleash the hidden creativity you never knew you had!
While on your travels, perhaps you pass a gallery on a busy street and spot the most beautiful, captivating piece of artwork you’ve ever seen. This art piece is one you could never find anywhere else in the world. The paintings are done by a local artist you’ve never heard of, but you’re drawn into their shop and find yourself ordering several pieces to bring back home.
Creating art from your vacation is fun too!
Something cool to do is to collect trinkets and small items from your excursions that you can use to create a memory board or collage of your journey. Used tickets, paper maps, pieces of cloth, and even flowers and leaves pressed into your travel folder can make beautiful additions to your post-journey project. Perhaps you took a photo of a gorgeous sunset on a beach and want to have it printed to use it as the backdrop for your project. You can collect a few seashells, small stones, or sea glass to add to your masterpiece. You can even add some sprinkles of sand to your paint mixture to give your beautiful photograph or collage added texture. Creating a trip collage can also be a wonderful post-travel project for your children.
Art comes in so many forms that seeing it everywhere is natural.
Although distant travel is a fantastic experience, often, we can find extraordinary and inspiring sights within a few miles of where we live. Take a stroll through your local park and watch how many unique and beautiful sights you’ll find or exciting photos you can take. Even walking through a shopping area, admiring the window displays or architecture can motivate you to pull out a sketch pad or canvas and experiment with a new idea. There could be a mysterious gentleman selling gourmet cheese from a travel cart with a colorful umbrella or a beautiful butterfly who dances on the breeze and decides to settle beside you on a bench that ignites something inside you to capture that moment through your own vision.
